Do You Need a New Set of Dice or a Therapist?

Let’s be honest—most of us in the TTRPG scene have more dice than we actually use. You start with one set, maybe two, and before you know it you’ve got a whole drawer full. Some are color-coded to characters, others were impulse buys at conventions or late-night online shopping decisions. It’s not a problem, necessarily… but it does start to feel like a habit.

Dice are easy to justify. They’re small, affordable (mostly), and every set feels like it brings a little extra luck or personality to the table. That shiny blue swirl set? Perfect for your storm sorcerer. The heavy metal dice? Great for making your DM flinch every time you roll initiative. But after the tenth set, you start to realize you’re buying more for the collector’s itch than the actual need.

There’s nothing wrong with loving dice—it’s part of the fun. But it’s worth checking in once in a while: Are you picking up a new set because you’re genuinely excited to use them, or just because it’s been a rough week and you needed a quick boost? If it’s the latter, maybe pause and see if a walk, a game night, or chatting with your group does the trick.

At the end of the day, whether you’ve got two sets or twenty, the goal is to enjoy the game. If collecting dice is part of that for you, great. Just maybe don’t buy a new set every time a Kickstarter launches… unless it glows in the dark. That’s different.
